The Downtown Line (DTL) 2 will open on Dec 27, announced Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew on Aug 6).
Rides on both DTL 1 and 2 will be free for a few days after Dec 27, to “encourage commuters to try out the new line”, said Mr Lui.
“I especially encourage residents from the Bukit Panjang and Bukit Timah belt to take the trains to the city, to enjoy the festive lights, to do some post-Christmas shopping or even attend the New Year Countdown,” said Mr Lui at a visit to the new Gali Batu Depot.
The 12 DTL2 stations run from Bukit Panjang to Rochor before connecting with the existing six DTL1 stations. Aside from the development of new lines, Mr Lui said there was much more to do to improve the reliability of the nation’s existing train system.
With regards to the North-South East-West line train breakdown on July 7, Mr Lui said: “It is natural for commuters to ask if reliability has improved at all since 2011. My short answer is yes, it has improved, but not enough.”
Compared to 2011, train delays of less than five minutes have been reduced by about 30 per cent, and trains travel, on average, more than double the distance before experiencing such a delay.
However, Mr Lui said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) had to continue putting in effort to address large scale or prolonged disruptions.
The LTA plans to handle these disruptions in three ways: With a rigorous maintenance regime to prevent problems like leaks and worn-down insulators (which caused July 7’s disruption), upgrading the infrastructure of older lines and building new lines to improve connectivity.
